The Auckland/Waikato Region offers a wide diversity of freshwater fishing opportunities with many lake, river and back country fisheries, most with easy access and high scenic values. The Waikato/Hauraki area is also known as the country's ‘Duck Factory.’ Those living in the Auckland/Waikato region have ready access to the best waterfowl hunting in the country – most of it within an hour’s drive of Auckland City.

Fish & Game staff were recently on the Whakapapa and Whanganui Rivers monitoring water quality and witnessed some amazing hatches in the late evening, and heard cicada sounding off all day.
